All about wicks
Let us forget our age of high technology for a second and have a purely scientific look at the mechanics of a candle flame. When we light the wick of a candle, the heat of the flame melts the wax.
We work closely with universities and research institutes in a wide range of research areas and invest in both personnel and equipment for further Research and Development activities. On this basis, the Stifterverband Bildung, Wissenschaft, Innovation (German Sponsors Association for Education, Science and Innovation) awarded us the “Innovative through Research” seal of approval.
The Institute for Textile Machinery and Textile High-Performance Material Technology (ITM) is a teaching and research department at TU Dresden. It is one of the university’s largest and most productive departments. We work together with ITM on the basis of ZIM research projects.
ITV Denkendorf is the largest textile research centre in Germany. ITV carries out fundamental and applied research along the entire textile supply chain, from the raw material to the final product. Technical schools at the point of production, specialised laboratories and own production and testing procedures developed at ITV enable us to solve complex, sophisticated industry problems. We work together with ITM on the basis of ZIM research projects.
The Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) is a Bavarian university with campuses in Triesdorf and Weihenstephan. HSWT is a leading university for the agricultural sciences and environmental engineering; its courses of study have an intensive practical orientation. We work together with ITM on the basis of ZIM research projects.
With its department for textile and garment technology in Mönchengladbach, the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, is one of the main European centres of study in the field of textile engineering. With a long tradition spanning more than 100 years, the school offers comprehensive and highly versatile Bachelor and MSc degree courses in the field of textiles. In the past, students were awarded a German engineering diploma (FH) instead. The employees of our Wedo Research & Development team all graduated from the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences with degrees in textile engineering.

Ideal wick position: The wick protrudes from the candle in a straight line and bends towards the flame boundary, entering the “glow zone”, where it burns fully at the highest temperature under the influence of oxygen.
The flame of a candle is separated into different glowing and temperature areas, which are easily visible to the naked eye: (1) Candle (2) Wick (3) Blue zone: Usually outside of the luminous zone Hottest zone due to oxygen contact
